Linslade Western Bypass

History of the Linslade Western Bypass

The bypass has been around since 1982

More Recent/The Public Inquiry in 2003

Planning permission was granted, by Buckinghamshire County Council in 1997, but there were problems with the funding, so it lapsed and was re-granted in 2002. Following this, South Beds FoE wrote into the Secretary of State for Transport asking for a Public Inquiry. As a result of this and other objectors writing in, a Public Inquiry was held in July 2003. We formed a coalition with the Leighton Buzzard Society, the Ramblers Association and South Beds CPRE. We employed a Transport expert Alan James and a barrister, and an ecology expert, who all appeared at the Inquiry. To pay for these, and they were only working at a fraction of their normal cost, we had to raise £8000, nearly half of which came from local donations.

There were letters in the paper on the issue for three months. The Public Inquiry lasted for two weeks. Several other local objectors put forward their concerns. There was a big demonstration on the first morning, and lots of coverage in the local papers. We also had a two page article and a photo in the Society section of the Guardian.
