Climate Change Airport Protest

Saturday 5th April saw thousands of campaigners around the country take action on Climate Change

issues and South Beds Friends of the Earth was no exception

The national day of action was to highlight the need for the government’s new Climate Change Bill to include carbon emissions from international shipping and aviation.

South Beds FoE took to the streets of Dunstable in the morning to encourage people to sign postcards asking Gordon Brown to strengthen the Bill. The public response was fantastic with over 70 postcards signed.

The group then met up with other environmental campaigners for a photo opportunity at Luton airport, with its very own blindfolded Gordon Brown ‘ignoring’ the planes flying overhead and their emissions.

The stunt attracted media coverage across the board both before and after the event which the group hope will put pressure on local MPs to make sure they vote for a strong Climate Change Law when it is debated in the Commons later this month.

Why should our local industry and businesses be held to account for their carbon emissions but not the aviation industry?  Having a climate change law that doesn’t include our share of international aviation emissions is like having a drink-driving law that ignores the effects of whisky.

Friends of the Earth have led the campaign for a strong Climate Change law through ‘The Big Ask’ campaign.

The law, which is set to be introduced this summer, is groundbreaking but only if it is strengthened sufficiently for the UK to play its part in tackling climate change.
