Background (see table of proposed housing numbers)
Where are the Jobs coming from? Knowledge/science based industries or the expansion of Luton airport
Greenspace & Wildlife The strength of feeling over New Linslade Wood showed how important trees, wildlife and green space are for many local people. We need places where children can play safely. Bird populations have dramatically fallen, some by as much as 80%. Our parents could pick wildflowers when they were children, our children cannot do that. What are we giving our children? No woodland where they can run around, no birds, no wildlife.
English Nature, along with the Environment Agency and the Wildlife Trusts, produced guidelines stating that every house should be no more than 300m from the nearest area of natural greenspace - which should be at least two hectares in size - and a minimum of one 20 hectare site within 2km from their home. These targets, which are minimal, have not been put into the proposals. Therefore when the developers are being asked to fund schools, roads, and social housing, greenspace could easily be left out as money is too tight. An example is Billington Park, which has no greenspace of any value.
