Housing & MKSM |

MKSM (Milton Keynes and South Midlands Sub-Regional Strategy)
Background (see table of proposed housing numbers)
Where are the Jobs coming from? Knowledge/science based industries or the expansion of Luton airport According to the consultants thousands of new jobs will come from knowledge based jobs generated by spin off industries from Oxford and Cambridge universities. Seriously! Even though transport to Oxford and Cambridge is very poor and the government still will not fund East West Rail from Oxford to Cambridge via Bletchley and Bedford. Where is all the money for training and up-skilling people?
According to government ministers the new jobs will come from Luton airport which will expand from seven million passengers per annum to 30 million passengers per annum, a fourfold increase. So having the housing will make the noise unbearable. In South Beds there are only half the number of jobs to number of houses so they obviously expect Leighton Buzzard and Dunstable to grow as dormitory towns. However, the rail lines into London are already congested, as are the roads, therefore commuters will spend more of their day in hideous journeys to and from work.
In Luton many highly paid manufacturing jobs have been lost recently and the only new jobs are low paid service jobs. Is the area just going to become large warehouse distribution centre beside large roads for servicing London?
